Immediately after the completion of Paul in 1836, Mendelssohn took the lead to the idea of ??composing another oratorio. Until the composition of the "Elijah", which has the history of the biblical prophet from the first book of kings, however, a whole decade should pass. When the offer reached him to write a major work for the music festival in Birmingham, Mendelssohn began working on the oratorio. There, the "Elias" in 1846 premiered with great success and has enjoyed uninterrupted popularity ever since.

Following the premiere Mendelssohn underwent the oratory of a revision, accounted for in the whole numbers and added more. In this version, in which the work is played today, the "Elijah" was first performed in 1847 in London.

In time for the Mendelssohn-2009 presents the Mendelssohn specialist Douglass Seaton, a professor at Florida State University, a critical edition of the oratorio . The edition reflects the latest state of research and offers both the English and German texts of the work. A critical commentary completes the new edition.
