Equality in this case is to be understood less in a musical sence but rather as a meaningful unit of the battle of the sexes. The piano serves to pointedly express what has been said, what has been hurled at the audience (The pianist also speaks a short line from Michael Leunig's 'Poems' 1972-2002). A short effective piano piece on a theme which concerns everybody. Commissioned by the Cheltenham Festival, the piano composition by Brett Dean, born in Australia in 1961 and a long-time member of the viola section of the Berlin Philharmonic, was performed for the first time in 2004 by Sarah Nicolls.
