As is often the case in his work, the composer assumes spiritual images: while the first movement, "Landscape in Expectation", spreads an imaginary space between "impersonal" contrapuntal and longing expressive parts, the second movement, "Maria and the Angel" : The meditative immersion of the young godmother is interrupted by the heavenly messenger whose music is based on an Indian raga. Finally, Maria accepts her vocation and connects her motives with those of the angel. The representation of both spheres by a single instrument is of particular charm.
